Lila Ammons is a versatile singer with broad experience. Born in Chicago, she has forged a path in music that honors tradition and her own expressive impulses. Beginning her vocal career in opera houses and concert halls, she later turned to her roots. Since 2008, Ammons has gained popular and critical acclaim touring Europe and singing classic blues with German pianist Axel Zwingenberger, and as featured vocalist in a Classic Blues and the Boogie Woogie quartet with Zwingenberger, Rolling Stones late drummer, Charlie Watts, Dave Greene (bass) and Ben Waters (piano) and has performed in some of Europe’s most prestigious concert halls and jazz venues. She has also toured as a solo jazz vocalist in England, Spain and Ireland. Most recently, Ammons has focused on her Twin Cities jazz ensemble, the “Lila Ammons Jazz Group”, which features some of the Twin Cities’ top musicians. Ammons comes from strong pedigree, which influences her musical instincts. Her grandfather was esteemed pianist Albert Ammons, and her uncle was tenor saxophonist titan, Gene Ammons. Through recordings and live performances alike, Ammons continues to attract new audiences with her nuanced vocal jazz narratives, a respect for jazz idioms, and an unpredictability that delights.
